TRAVERSE CITY – Pets are family. And when they hurt because of age or an accidental injury, the first thought on any pet owner’s mind is to find out the best way to fix it and relieve their pet’s pain or discomfort.
Companion Animal Hospital of Traverse City has a way to help.
“Cold Laser Therapy can have a very positive effect on many different conditions and ailments, (including) arthritis, gingivitis and periodontal disease, open wounds, rhinitis/sinusitis, hot spots, ear infections and painful trauma areas, and the list goes on,” said Terry Seymour, practice manager.
“When clients find out that we can have a significant effect on these ailments without drugs, or at least with reduced drugs, at a reasonable cost, they are very interested.”
Cold Laser Therapy has been used in the past on world-class athletes and thoroughbred race horses, he added, and is now available for pets. The therapy “stimulates healing on a cellular level,” said Seymour. “It helps stimulate the cells in the problem areas and helps the body help itself. The treatments are painless, warm and soothing for the patient. It’s kind of like a spa treatment for your pet that really helps them feel better.
“We have already had some exciting and fairly spectacular results,” he added. “This is truly an exciting new treatment alternative.”
Originally, the practice was cautious about the therapy’s results, but the clients’ positive reactions were immediate.
“Of course, pets and their situations are all different, and we are trying to be careful to temper the expectations, but we really are seeing great results,” Seymour said. “The stories of relief (sometimes nearly immediate) from some chronic conditions simply cannot be dismissed. When someone comes in and tells you their dog has been playing and running up and down the steps after two or three laser treatments, when she hadn’t been up the stairs for over two years because she had been in such pain, well that’s pretty incredible, and we have had many such stories.
“In some cases, clients had contemplated euthanasia, after exhausting medical alternatives, to salvage some quality of life for their pet. You can imagine the excitement these people have to ‘get their pet back’ and have a significantly better quality of life. We are very excited about it and so are our clients.”
While Companion Animal Hospital isn’t alone in offering this affordable treatment, it’s not surprising that they are at the forefront of new veterinary technologies.
“This is an example of veterinary medicine being out ahead of human medicine,” Seymour stated. “Right now, Cold Laser Therapy is used in sports medicine, mostly by professional sports teams. Here at Companion Animal Hospital, we take great pride in practicing high-quality, current veterinary medicine. This is another step down that road.
“There are some in the profession that think Cold Therapy Laser is the most important new treatment in veterinary medicine in the last 30 or 40 years. It is very clear to us that this technology, with the proper guidance, can be a very powerful tool to help many of our special pet friends.”
Since Dr. Lynch's return to practice, my Senior dog's problem of many years has improved tremendously with VOM, Acupuncture/Acupressure and Chinese herbs. Dr. Lynch's ability to assess the symptoms and zero in on an effective treatment was remarkable. I am thrilled to have these alternative veterinary services available in Traverse City.

I would highly recommend Dr. Lynch for treatment. The acupuncture treatments that he has done for my cat, Maxx, have done a world of good. It has made a huge difference and the effects from the treatments have been immediate for Maxx. It is so nice to have this treatment option available.

Thanks to the entire staff of Companion Animal Hospital for tirelessly working with me to assist my dog with her fear of nail cutting! She is now able to have this procedure without any fears or resistance! Additionally the wellness care and the sincere interest in her from the staff is so nice. Always pleasant and professional the Doctors and staff are above average. I recommend this Animal Hospital to all my friends and co-workers and many now use them with the same satisfaction.
