Dental disease, what we can see with the naked eye and on x-ray, is a major cause of unrecognized pain for pets. Left untreated, dental disease can advance and cause kidney, liver and heart disease. Disease in this area has a direct impact on your pet’s quality of life.
In fact, dental disease (Periodontal Disease) affects over 75% of all dogs and cats that are greater than 2 years of age. Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues surrounding and supporting the teeth. Infections in and/or around teeth hurt and not only will our pets seldom let us know they hurt, they often go to substantial lengths to hide symptoms due to their survival instincts. That’s the bad news.
The good news is that we (you and our team) can do something about it! It all starts with regular evaluations. Our doctors will “Grade” the status of your pet’s mouth with each regular Wellness visit (at least once per year to age 6 and at least twice per year over age 6). They will explain what the grade for your pet means and give you a specific course of action for your pet.
Part of the action our doctor’s may suggest is Dental Radiographs (X-Rays). Dental x-rays help us identify problems with teeth that we cannot otherwise see (Ex. abscessed roots). They also help us decide if a tooth can be saved or needs extraction.
Dental care is one important aspect of your pet’s health that together we can have a great positive impact. We encourage you to see your veterinarian regularly, have your pet evaluated and ask what you can do to help your pet be happy and healthy. Our doctors and staff are ready to help.
